a few good films...

i have been auditing "reading film from a theological perspective" at regent college. it's been an amazing class and has really sparked an interest in film pre 1950 (since that is all we really study).
here's a list of some great films... great classics, by the best in the business!
(director in bold)

Charles Chaplin
  • the kid (1920)
  • city lights (1931)
Carl Th. Dreyer
  • The Passion of Joan of Arc (1927/28)
Frank Capra
  • It happened One night (1934) (one of three movies in history to win Oscar for Best Picture, directing, actor, actress, and writing) (ps. the others in this category are One flew over the cuckoos(1975) and the silence of the lamb (1991)
  • You can't take it with you (1938)
  • Meet John Doe (1941)
  • and the much loved... It's a wonderful life (1946)
John Ford
  • Stagecoach (1939)
  • How green was my valley (1941) - i've watched this one 3 times in the past 2 months
  • My Darling Clementine (1946) - we are watching this tonight so not sure if i can recommend it.
Howard Hawks
  • His girl friday
  • Red river
Alfred Hitchcock
  • Rebecca
Gregory LaCava
  • My Man Godfrey (1936)
Fritz Lang
  • Metropolis (1926)
  • M (1931)
F.W. Murnua
  • Nosferatu (1922) (similar to dracula)
  • Sunrise (1927)
  • both interesting examples of German Expressionism in Film
Orson Welles
  • Citizen Kane (1941) - considered by many the best movie ever made
So that's that. So many more films out there. We have found many are available at our public library as opposed to video stores (plus it's free!!!) We are just about to set in and watch John Fords My dear Clementine (a western... yep, i'm even enjoying westerns)
